Casting Spinnerbaits and Buzzbaits with bait casting reel

Anyone have any tips on how to avoid twisting spinnerbaits/buzzbaits when casting frequently due to line twist? This always just seems so unavoidable as I continue to cast with these baits while fishing which is frustratingly impacting casting distance and smoothness of the baits transition from air to water surface. I appreciate any tips/pointers. Thank you!

Use braid.

Not a fan of braid in particular unless I'm fishing frogs or heavy wood cover, but I get you're drift. Thanks!

I use braid exclusively now.
In the past I used mono and fished spinnerbaits a lot. I don’t remember line twist ever being an issue.
About the only recommendation I can imagine would be to use a GOOD ball Bearring swivel several inches up the line.
I think there is probably more bad with this idea than good. For obvious reasons.
Do you think the twist is happening because of tumbling on the cast?
I’ve had that on some musky lures , particularly big plastics . I’ve had to thumb the spool to get the lure straightened out mid flight and this seemed to help. This really just makes sure he lure momentum stretches the lure out before impact with the water instead of crashing in a balled up mess

Hi Ben, not sure what you mean by tumbling cast? To your point thumbing the line to your point does help. The only downside I see doing that is that it's limiting my casting distance as well.

The lure is spinning in the air causing twist in the line. Not the blades rotating but the lure body spinning or tumbling.

Yes! 👍 Thanks for clarifying. I'm pretty sure that's exactly what's happening. Lure body starts to spin causing twist in the air

I throw Buzzbaits with my topwater rod which is loaded with 30lb Powerpro. Spinnerbaits I throw on my crankbait rod which is loaded with 17lb fluorocarbon. Once in a while it will helicopter casting into the wind, but I've never noticed line twist as a result, but the trailer hook might catch the line, and ruin the cast.

Im with fredfish, never had a twisting problem with either spinnerbaits, or buzzbaits. Is your line old? What line, and test are you using?

I was mistaken, its not the line twisiting its the bait that twist and spirals out of control in mid air. It doesn't happen all the time but it does happen often as I've been casting for a while. I use floro and mono usually about 15 lb test line. It's not old line.

Yea JD, the wind will catch the blades and cause them spin around. I call it helicoptering, and it can happen with any line . I just try to avoid casting into the wind, with most lures except spoons or jigs.

I hear ya, Thanks Fred, sometimes it still happens even without wind though, thanks for taking the time to respond. I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas for how to prevent it from happening.

If it helps any, I find that a smooth follow through type cast works a little better than a snap type. Good luck JD, and Merry Christmas!

I'm with Fredfish. Smooth follow thru. Low and straight.
