When I worked for Goodyear Chemical, we made Hydrocodone, which is an additive for tires to keep them from degrading and it keeps them black. The chemicals that go into making this is sulphuric acid, benzene, which is a carcinogenic (causes cancer), and acetone. It’s a tan colored powder that was put into fiber drums and shipped to tire manufacturing plants.

Welcome to the Forum, CGB, Thanks for sharing, that chemical probably kills fish all over the world.

No wonder Painkillers are so bad for people. Hydrocodone is Vicodin.

It wasn’t hydrocodone. It was hydro something but I can’t remember what. I don’t think they use that same process now. I’ve been reading about the manufacturing of tires now. Sorry.😐

Pardon me, and with all due respect, shouldn't your motto be "The worst day of fishing is always better than the best day of work."?

Glad Jeremy chimed in....I about fell out of my chair when I read there was Vicodin in my tires.... for a moment I was thinking..."locking lug nuts? or just another good reason to install more lighting on my driveway?... those degenerate druggies ain't gonna get to my vehicles"..... LOL !

It keeps the tires feeling good. Think of all the weight they carry :)

Your only about the third person to ask about it. Your right though. Its more of a thing to see who reads it.

That’s why I don’t turn to big pharma for aches and pains.

If the preservative “6PPD” is the problem it should be easily resolved. Just quit using it and go back to what they used decades ago when tires lasted years and DIDN’T kill fish. Never used to be a “use before this date” on tires when I was a kid. Or even a young adult. Now you can’t even get a flat fixed if the date on the tire is over about a year old. 🤔
