He is right to start the reel is the best place to skimp. Get a good all around rod since you will be fishing more then one type of water/fish and get really good line and backing. The reel to start is truly secondary till you get your fly fishing legs the line and rod make difference when you start. I would also tell you to grab a reel with extra spools so that you can change line for fish type.....get a good 3w spooled upfor small water trout and get a 5-7w spooled up for bass/salmon. Thats your best starting point.....best of luck!
