Friend of mine is picking up saltwater fishing, any recommendations for a lure as a gift?

Friend will mostly be fishing from the mainland Atlantic coast and an island out in the northern Atlantic.

Budget is around $40 and I'm open to both practical and cool-but-kind-of-practical lure gifts. Not interested in personalized or inscribed stuff. Vintage would be cool.

I don't know anything about fishing, any recommendations?

Some poppers or stickbaits. Daiwa SP minnows, nomad chug norris, nomad madscad, halco roosta.

in the 1-2 oz range.

Not very vintage but buy him 4 different Rappala poppers for any topwater need! Fish them in the surf for trout, small sharks, and jacks among other things. Inshore you can get those fish as well as stripers depending on where he lives. This is a tiny amount of fish I've listed of a myriad of different possibilities. Can't go wrong with the ole topwater popper.

If you don't wish to go the lure route, why not a Tide Chart, or a book on knots? Different and useful. Just Sayin....RJS

Luckycraft SW surf pointer. Best there is in my opinion. Anything out there that eats other fish will hit it. Not cheap. Worth the money. I have the 115s and 110s. Jack smelt pattern. They really work.

Buck tails , spoons, surface plugs, needle plugs. Most plugs are about 12.00 dollars or more Buck tails depending on the oz. weight.

Milt Rosko's book 'Fishing the Big Four' and a couple of Hopkins Shorties is perfect for the mid-Atlantic and that island in the north Atlantic.
