Heavy frost last night in NE Texas

We had our first real frost last night. I had covered my tomato plants but they didn't survive. I didn't really expect them to but I was hoping. I just picked A LOT of green tomatoes. I'll fry some of them for dinner and then make pickled green tomatoes with the rest. Are any of my "northern friends" on here familiar with pickled green tomatoes or is that a "southern thing?" (And, yes, as a life long Texan I agree with RJS that Texas really isn't part of "the South.")

PapaJ: I am amazed that anyone agrees with me on anything. While we may like Fried Greet Tomatos, it doesn't make us southern, nor pickled green tomatoes, or chow-chow, or gumbo, and the list goes on. Just Sayin....RJS

Well Egg, when your summer is only 6 weeks long it makes it tough to grow tomatoes. Personally I like green fried tomatoes, and I don't live south. We always had them once a year when the first frost hit. Never did pickle greenies though.

I had a lot of green tomatoes that I let ripen inside. Had them for 2 months after I picked them day before we had our first freeze here in Clovis NM. I like fried green tomatoes don’t like to cook them.

Wrap some of the green Tomatoes in newspaper and store them in a cool dry place. You can unwrap a couple now and then and put them in the direct sun to ripen and you may get them to last a couple months !

You bet, Pickled Green tomatoes. Here we do them early season. Put away a few gallons before we let the rest start ripening. I add lots of sweet onion and plenty of hot peppers. Do a simple cold pack. Keep pretty well in the fridge.
