Fluorocarbon line vs. leader?

Want to add leader to my braid main line. Apparently there’s a big difference between leader and line cost wise. Recently saw a member recommend Seaguar for flouro leader. Working with 30lb braid.

I always use fluoro under the braid when fishing freshwater, inshore, or offshore. It's more expensive but that is the cost of doing business. I think it helps to keep the skunk off your back. (MHO)

I've been spooling trout reels with flouro, then use the end rolls for leader material, a tournament trout fisherman I know recommended 30lb flouro for leaders for big Browns that will cut your line otherwise. I use 4/5/6 pound line for trout so it makes good leader material

Leader to braid I have been using straight seaguar AbrazX or InvisX
I tried seaguar blue label specific leader. It’s great stuff, but I picked up a bad spool one time that cost me fish.
I still use it from time to time but always check it first

I keep spools of 8,10,12 and 14 on hand to match what I’m doing

When I’m looking for something stiff, like when using jerkbaits , I use P Line.
It’s a little stiffer and doesn’t foul 3 treble jerkbaits as much

I don’t think for fresh water , leader specific line is worth the additional cost.

I change leaders out often. A 150 yard spool lasts a long time .

If you can, learn to tie the FG knot.
Very small diameter and very strong.
I use just shy of rod length .
This allows several reties and doesn’t get in the reel where it might cause issues
I generally tie this knot at home . I think it’s a little too involved to do in the boat.
On the water, I’ll use the Alberto.
In my opinion it’s just easier.

Also as a confidence booster I’ll work a little Loon UV cure knot glue on the knot.
Just a little peace of mind keeping everything super strong.
Sunlight cures it very quickly.

Tying the fg knot with two fingers is very easy to do even in the wind, I also use fouro line, 20 lb. test, instead of leader material and have no problem with the leader breaking from abrasion or where the knot is tied.

I'm with you, Ben, 8# for walleyes, 10# - 12# for inshore, & 14# for offshore. I don't go after anything big offshore, mostly bee liners or whatever else tags along without big teeth.

Fly I don’t get a chance to do any salt fishing so I’ll take your word for it.
I get up to the heavier flouros if I want to influence Deep crankbait depths.
A super deep crank like a megabass deep six I get about 2 1/2 ft difference between 10 and 14 pound leader.
Also will up size when zebra mussels are around.
They shred leader no matter what I use.

What Ben Bragg says. I use Seaguar Invizx, which some people say is what BassPro’s fluoro is. 6# for walleye, 8-12# for bass, and 30# for pike.

Never attempted the fg knot, Looks too complex for my abilities. Have had good luck with the j knot and double uni for braid to leader connections but should up my skills.

I always use fluorocarbon anything to help the bite with fish that have good eye sight or fussy fish drop leader size down and hide the hook , fluorocarbon inexpensive insurance, look around at what it cost to go fishing from rods and reels to boats and motors it can get quite pricey

Tried using 20# Vanish Flouro for a leader when snelling a #1 circle hook. Ended up with a number of lost hooks and a curry Q end of line. Isn't made for snelling hooks.

I like the J-knot too. And the double uni is my backup knot.
