I just ordered my Xmas gift to me. A Shimano Sellus 7' med rod and left hand Abu Garcia black max. It will be the second baitcaster I've bought. The other is an Abu Garcia Vegence rod mh 7' with the same reel. I do know that the reels are on the novice side. But with a baitcaster I'm still a novice. So next year I'll be going out mainly with these two rods to learn the ins and outs. The black max and vengence rod I took to a football field and learned how to cast and pitch last summer. I used 5 gallon buckets to throw at and learned pretty quick. Now I just need to catch fish on them. Lol

Me too. Lol. Ive been a spinning reel guy all my life. Ive pretty much shut down fishing this year do to health. So that means build up my stock and get the canoe ready for next season. Then right before spring I'll be back at it as long as I'm healthy enough.

I've got a few fields to practice in. My thought was to put them at different yard markers and that way I could see and feel the difference on what it takes. A muscle memory thing.

Good luck with your present Rob.I use a Black Max on a Lightening Rod Shock, medium, fast. It's my spinnerbait- crankbait, and occasionally jerkbait rod. You can't beat them, for the price.

Sounds like a great Rod and Reel. I think you have quite a bit more control during cast with a BC. Spinning are good for a lot of fishing too but BC is a great way to fish. Can THUMB the line a little to control it more than spinning.

Jeremy that was the hardest part for me to teach myself. Getting use to that will definitely take me longer bit I'll get. Redfin running a crank bait in the fall and colder part of the spring has been something I like to do. Learning on a baitcaster should be fun.

If your just learning to operate it you will probably want to set the preload a bit tighter to reduce backlashes until you get better. The spool should have a tension setting usually on opposite side from crank. When it is set properly you want it to slowly spin with no thumb when an ounce or 2 is on leader with bail open.

Once you get better you can reduce the tension so you can get much farther controlled casts.
