My fishing buddy was so enamored with the Rainbows he trolled up last week, he wanted to go back for more. Ok by me, I'll try for those deep Bass I couldn't get to bite last week. Forecast close to 60°,light wind, partly cloudy.
Reality, maybe hit 54°,light wind, all clouds all day. Found the deep Bass in a couple spots, tried a tube, jig, hard jerkbait, drop shot with a halfshell, yum dinger, ocho, wacky worm, and a zoom monster worm, all fished painstakingly slow due to the 47°water. NADA, not even a sniff! Meanwhile my buddy tried the shallows with no success, so he started trolling. I saw trout feeding on the surface, an since I brought my trout bucket of goodies,I figured what the hey,why not. Threw a Mooselook Wobbler out behind the boat and kicked the trolling motor up to 1.7mph.
Had the first hit 5 minutes later, dropped him at the boat. Note to self :shut trolling motor off when fighting a trout!
Missed one more but brought 4 into the boat, forgot cooler so CPR ed all fish.
Another work buddy, trout fanatic, says Green lures don't work, so when i saw a deep school I threw out a firetiger Berkley derdger crankbait with lots of green on it. Tied the first fish at 1lb 13oz, the others varied from 14oz to 1lb 9oz. By the way, my buddy got skunked.
My fishing buddy was so enamored with the Rainbows... (show quote)

Yeah Lee, ever since I started boating, @about 10yrs old, this has been the most depressing time of the year.

Wow! Fred. Who’s boat are you guys on? I’ll bet you wish you still had that boat around.

That was my dad's 1st and only boat.,28ft Dodge ,built in 1936. It was great to have then, but would be much more trouble than it's worth now. Narrow beam, pitched and rolled terribly. Flathead 6cyl,80hp, lapstrake hull (packing and caulking every year). There's many other old boats I'd rather have.

Albemarles are a huge step up from Bayliner class boats, Lee. Did you have the 32?

No it was a 30, i used to go offshore alot with it but back then fuel was $1.25 a gallon, it's just that paying for a slip and winter storage every year got too much for me and i had no choice but to sell it, i'll see if i can find a picture if your interested

No biggy, I've looked at a few over the years, very nice boats. They were among several on my "Powerball " boat list.LOL. Top of the list was a 35 Cabo. I LOVED those when they came out. I wasn't greedy, just wanted something 2 people could crew. When you get much above 35, you really need a third person on deck, for docking, etc.
I'll admit to going to the Javits Center every winter, and touring 55 Vikings, 54 Hatteras, and 60 Bertrams. Just to see how the other half lives, as they say.

Hey Fred. Again you didn't get skunked. Any time after Thanksgiving is borrowed time around here . Where's your beard in that picture with your brother? You have good taste in boats. The Cabo is real nice. My offshore fishing was on my friends 35 Viking, real nice. Hope you get 1 or 2 more trips in before closing up boat

Yeah. I know what you mean. I had a 25’ wood boat and it always needed something.

Thanks YB, I'm probably done,if you can believe the long range forecast.
The beard took a couple more years to grow in LOL.
Back when I had my old Luhrs, I was always looking to move up, and kinda favored "Jersey " style boats. 33Pacemaker, 33or35 EggHarbor, 38 Ocean Super Sport. Mainly because of the beautiful wood interiors, and the fact that they were good on fuel, having a shallower V at the transom. But after going offshore a couple times I learned to appreciate a Deep V in rough water. Bertrams were top dog but the interior design was like my Luhrs, Formica.Vikings and Hatteras were better, and we had one of each in my marina,to compare.
When Cat Harbor came out with the 35 Cabo I read all the writeups and was impressed. The following fall I looked at one at the Norwalk in water show, and was very impressed by the Quality, and especially fit and finish. With like 8 engine options, you could get in under 200k(with gas),or up around 300k with 3208 cats. I could NEVER afford either, but I fell in love anyway. Pretty enough inside, excellent bottom design, built like a tank, and decent on fuel, and easy to fish. Unfortunately those days are gone.....

Agree with you on the boat choices. My friend had a 31 Bertram before the Viking. I keep going back and forth on the boat choices also, then when I decide I wake up and go to work. Anything over 18 ft will only be in dreams

Yeah YB the 31 is a beast. One of the guys on my dock had one, with cockpit throttles and shifters. He used to solo shark fish. I think his best was a 16ft thresher, with 9ft tail. His family owned a heating oil company, brought his own fuel to the marina. Those triple nickel Cats were thirsty.
