So I have a 3wt rod and a 5wt trout rod. I use the 3wt the most but I only have a cheap 5wt starter reel/line. I’m looking for a reel that supports 3-5 at line and am planning on buying a spare spool to run both 3 and 5wt lines. Good plan? If so, what reel is the way to go? Looking at maybe the orvis battenkill.

Ive had a number of these. They are OK but for a few extra bucks you get a huge upgrade with a Galvan.

I’d get 2 reels. The difference between 3 and 5 weights is enough. A single reel for both would be too much of a compromise. No need to spend a fortune in these weights.

Check out Allen Kraken 2. Sealed drag, smooth drag, machined aluminum, well anodized. If you euronymph figure out weight of reel, line and backing to balance rod.

Hardy CADD 3000. Love that reel.

Get a Galvan Rush LT #4 with an extra spool. It will balance fine for both and its American made and fully machined with a great sealed drag. Best value for money.

Have had an Orvis Madison for 26 years. Orvis makes the most dependable fly reels if you treat them right. Best Rich
