Surf fishing Dauphin Island AL at some point in the next couple weeks. Any tips on available species and best baits in December. Apologies if there’s an active thread, I didn’t see one.

Welcome to the Forum, Steven. There was a tread going around a couple, three years ago, but I can't remember when he was fishing. Anyway and anyhow, Dolphin Island is a smaller area but it does have good fishing. Perhaps the pier, if it is still there, would be the best place to start. There has been a couple of hurricanes that have hit there since I have been there five years ago. You may also go over to the East side of Mobile Bay and fish the area around Gulf Shores/Orange Beach/Pensacola FL. Lots of places to fish, and it's good fishing. Use live shrimp on a Colorado rig. there is a very good local Fishing Forum there; Gulf Shores Pier Fishing. They will tell you everything you want to know. The bite seems to slow down in Dec., Jan., and Feb. when the water temp. is in the 60* range. Good luck and tight lines.

They do spell it Dauphin Island. Try the southern most around pier at western end for surf fishing to distance from dead zone Mobile Bay and you'll truly be in Gulf. There may be public access to Gulf on east end of isle but you'll need to talk with the locals 'cause all I'm aware of is the pier on western end then 5 miles east and the pier on eastern end on Bay and there are 2or3 rock jetties you can cast from. For $5 you can board Mobile Bay Ferry("Damn the torpedoes:full steam ahead!") with gear and hike around tip of Ft. Morgan to rock jetties there where I believe the water is better and fish more abundant. There is a public access to Gulf at entrance to Ft. Morgan property by following the shell road and hiking to southern-most coastal beach there, but you'll need a wheeled cart making it easier lugging gear and caught fish. Shiney spoons, speck rigs, live shrimp and cut bait. Look and find a "guide" which all of the unemployed locals call themselves.😃😃😃

When I fish on Dog Island, I use a pompano rig with sand fleas, sometimes fish bites. Catch whiting, pompano, reds, drum and sheep's head. Odd for the sheep's head to be found in the surf. I guess they swim around the island from the bay side.

The isle is also called the RedNeck Riviera, so if you go to the Ft. Morgan area you'll get a differing social flavor not having to focus on SWAT activities in the local trailer parks around the isle.😃😃😃 You'll see lotsa folk coming there from the big city, Mobile with baby daddies, chillen.

Pier in Gulf Shores Orange Beach is gone. Ft Morgan is a disaster. All thanks to Sally. The beaches in Gulf Shores just opened back up. Not sure whats left on Dauphine Island. But i think it will be a while before the surf fishing gets good again. Barney

Go for it, Stephen T. You may not only catch fish but discover a shallow, washed clean Spanish galleon and ingots after the storm. Back in the '70s it was easy finding bales of marijuana that had been tossed by drug running aircraft being pursued by the DEA. Coke also, so be on watch if you're into such. The shallow-depth, sunken whiskey barge(no whiskey I could see) off coast within casting distance
@Orange Beach is a fantastic place to throw a lure.
