I'm new to fishing in the sense I haven't gone in over 2 years. I dont have a pole or any type of gear for that matter. My question is what gear should I buy to start fishing again.

What type of fish do you want to catch? Where, generally, are you located? Freshwater or saltwater?

I live in CT so mainly freshwater, I don't plan on saltwater fishing for a while. But for the type of fish, rainbow trout, bass, and catfish.

I just picked up this combo from Cabelas (it was on sale for 70 bucks a few weeks back). I use it for throwing spinners for trout and drop shotting for large/smallmouth bass. You could definitely set it up with a bait rig for catfishing as well.

If that one is too pricey, I would say go to a Dick's Sporting goods/Cabelas/Wal-mart and see what is there, a lot of times there are some good in store deals/sales.

If you want 1 rod to use for all those types of fish then I would suggest something between 6 and 7 feet long, Medium weight, and fast action.

Tight lines, brother!

Go get a Ugly Stick combo a light to med rod and a 2500reel will get you started or even a 1000 reel. If you are going for Trout keep it as light as you can. I have caught many big fish on a 1000 reel and a light ugly stick ,and if you break it they will give you a new one . I just got a combo for 36.00 .

If you are doing fresh-water fishing, limit yourself to the basics. Set a price limit and don't go over it. But, do get good quality equipment. Suggest you start in the 12 pound test range. Bass Pro is very good at helping you pick within your price range. Good Luck.

Cheers! Richard.
