Put a box of armor hammer baking soda inside it.
I suspect what you are smelling is the thinner used in making the plastic worms. Be sure to keep those separated from any lure because this thinner will melt the pain on the lure and ruin it. Just Sayin...RJS
Art... you got me to thinking about and I have to tell that you are correct. Tackle boxes do not smell pretty, they smell like there supposed to... embrace the funk Art!
Your wife wants it out of the house? What’s she thinking.
One charcoal will soak up odor as well.
My approach would be much like the same scenario if it were your refrigerator. Pull everything out, scrub it down well with something fairly benign, like Dawn, or a very weak solution of Simple Green. Examine all your gear, while reorganizing, for any culprits that could be the source of odor. If it's a necessary item, ziploc it, if not, pitch it.
I have to say, that unless the odor is chemical in nature, it might be just the smell of fishing gear that has been used.... kinda testament to the fact that you are not sitting at home...a good thing.
My money is on you finding something as the culprit, that's hidden. Just a thought here, but we have "stink bugs" here, that absolutely love to crawl into dark areas ???...nasty odor.... check for them.
That lump of charcoal idea sounds great! Thanks!
Dollar store imitation vanilla will help.

The charcoal or baking soda. Works well almost anywhere.
Well, you can either unload and steralize the tackle box, as someone has suggested like your refrigerator, or you can get accustomed to the odor.
Remember, Hound dogs love a "aromatic" and "rank" odor, which sets them apart from other dogs. I think the smell is distinctive and sets you apart. But, it is too passionate, you may have to detox the odor and clean it out. Just Sayin...RJS
When I drove a 18 wheeler across US and Canada, I occasionally hauled hops to breweries. Hops leaves a strong smell in the trailer after unloading. You get the trailer washed out and sit a 5 lb bag of opened charcoal in the trailer. By the time you drive to your next loading dock the smell would be absorbed.
clean your lures and tackle box with soap and water
