With the weather turning cold and my fishing gear stored in the garage, what are the chances they get rusty? And how do I protect it from any damage from the cold?

Always store your reels inside during freezing temps. The grease will not freeze, but it will stiffen up and this can cause tightness to the reel. It's not permanent, but you'll feel it for a good amount of time during the next outing. The anti-reverse, especially an anti reverse dog, can stop working because of the grease getting cold and stiff. That can be permanent, because it very easily becomes misaligned by stiff grease and then brakes in different ways. The anti reverse clutch bearing can also be affected negatively. This is more seldom permanent, but it can happen. Store rods in the garage, store reels inside of your house. Your reels won't rust as long as your garage isn't humid. If you have a garage that is ventilated well and doesn't get down to freezing temps, then don't worry.
