I was thinking a JDM Shimano would suffice, but I’d like to make sure here. Any other suggestions?

I live on the west coast of FL so fish like Mackerel and Sea Trout. Planning on using either 30 lb Daiwa J braid or JDM Varivas.

It really depends on what you want to target? If you’re sure about wanting a Shimano, the Tranx reels have held up really well for my friend. He fishes for corvina and spotted bay bass in Cali (and he uses a 200 sized Tranx).

I’m a Shimano guy by heart, but if there are other reels that are recommended, I’m open to trying new things! And I’ll be sure to reach out to him soon. Thank you!

For those fish, the Tranx 200 will be an awesome reel. You don’t really need a 300 sized reel for that. Maintain the reel and it’ll last you long. No micro module gears in the Tranx either, so if you hear people complain about MM, this reel doesn’t have it.

Alright! And also, do you have any opinion for the Curado K? I heard some pretty great things about that reel as well.

Eh...not as refined as the DC or even the previous generation curados. They cast a mile with 1/2 oz lures, but there have been som problems with them. Also, definately not a saltwater reel. Water gets inside of the gearbox after every outing. The Tranx 200 is a much better reel.

Alright! The Tranx it is! I’ll do a little more self-research before considering. Thank you for your time!

Sounds good. Check for some JDM models on digitaka. I’m more of a freshwater and brackish water lightgame person. Digitaka.com is a great site if you find a JDM reel you want to get. Only one I have in mind is the Shimano Engetsu, but it doesn’t have the same support as the Tranx. It does have clicky drag though hehe...

Where are you fishing and what are you fishing for? I would suggest an Ambassadeur 5000 or 6000 size reel. I use and Penn Squidders for anything larger/heavier.

The Tranx 200 is a beast . Can’t go wrong with this. The 300 will handle just about anything you would ever hope to encounter.
The Calcutta is a beast.
Deep pockets for absolute awesome , Calcutta conquest is ultimate

Instead is the Calcutta, if you can find one, I would get a Penn International 965 or 975. I used to sell Calcuttas and as great a reels as they are, they are they were not built for saltwater, especially heavy duty and would need annual service. Get a reel that is built for saltwater.
