A question for the trout trollers:

If you use braided line, what pound test do you use, and do you use a spinning reel or a baitcaster?

Welcome to the Forum, Stan, I use a 6X tippet, that's about 2 lbs.

I have 20 lb. Power Pro on two of my 7' poles with spinning reels. They are my catfish rigs, but I troll for trout with them also. I do use a snap swivel and 24 inches of leader. But I noticed my line is starting to get twisted.

Your line should not twist with a swivel on it. Is it a good swivel, Randy? Power Pro is a good braid.

Maybe not the best swivels. Some times it all gets tangled up. The hook gets tangled with the braid. You don't realize it is all just spinning.

Look for some high quality ball bearing swivels Randy. When I fished the salt I only used Sampo brand. They were top of the line at the time. Not sure if there's any better out there now.

Since it's possible and even likely that you'll catch a variety of species when fishing, I generally use 15 or 20lb Power Pro braid, usually with an 8-10lb fluorocarbon leader. For example, last time we targeted Walleye, we also caught LM Bass, SM Bass, Perch, and trout. If it's indeed a trout fishery, 8-10lb braid is more than adequate. Caught many larger trout on 4-6 lb mono in the past.

Agree on the sampo swivels Fredfish. A bit more expensive but They Work. And to really think about it all, how many do you really lose? Worth every penny to reduce frustration

Yeah bk, I used larger ones in saltwater for spoons like Kastmasters,Krocodiles, and Hopkins. In freshwater I use tiny ones on my ultralight Trout /Snapper rods, throwing spoons and Mepps type spinners. Bass Pro recently came out with some "Double row" ones that have a set of balls on each end. Should work better but I haven't seen or tried them yet.

Hi GLA

I recently posted a problem with 10 lb. braid on my Daiwa Lexa line counter reel. I got snagged bad while trolling; afterwards I had trouble with the line coming off the reel freely--I had to swing the rod forward wth the boat moving to get the line to unspool. Some of the members here suggested this was line dig--exacerbated
by the very thin diameter of the line. I peeled off all the line and rewound it on the reel and have seen some improvement, but I still have to pull the line off by swinging the rod forward with the boat moving. Do you think switching to a heavier guage braid--15 or 20 lb. will resolve this situation, or would you suspect a problem with the reel? I appreciate your feedback!

Maybe you have the spool tension adjustment too tight?

I have line counter reels and I have 20 lb floro on them I adjust the leader size to match the fish size. Before I got my trolling rods I uses spinning rods with 10 lb braid and 10 lb floro leader. I usually fish n. Me. and Nh. So very seldom catch a fish bigger then 3 lbs.

I've loosened it to the point of it being sloppy--no change. I'll take another look at it , though.

Well Stan if everything is set right, you may have to refill with heavier line. Powerpro 10lb braid is the same diameter as 2lb mono. Spinning reels can handle line that small but I don't think too many Baitcasters can. Throw some 20lb braid on there and you should be all set.
