Pacific Northwest Bound: looking for advice

Hey everybody! Long time fly fisherman from Iowa here, specifically from the Driftless Region, and excited to start a new adventure in fly-fishing/life. I'm moving to Washington State/PNW for graduate school and wanted to start getting information for breweries, streams/rivers, and of course Salmon and Steelhead fishing, both gamefish I have not had the privilege of pursuing.

So, really what I'm asking is for:

1. advice on gear

2. advice on fly types/tying materials (I'd like to start to tie my own salmon/steelhead flies as I already tie most that I need here)

3. anyone in the Tacoma/Seattle area that wants to meet up to fish or have a beer (looking for some pals to explore the region with)

4. advice on places to go in the area/PNW in general

5. PNW fly shops to visit

6. any information you feel would be helpful for a young fly fisherman

Anyway, I know we are a secluded group of men and women who like to keep our holes secret and tips to ourselves, but I have had a lot of GREAT mentors over the years who have taught me all I know about the outdoors, specifically fishing/fly-fishing. I really hope to continue doing this throughout my life and eventually accumulate enough experience to share some of my knowledge with others as I do here in Iowa.

Tight lines everyone!

I'm a little farther south, but there are a bunch of good fly fishing groups and shops. The only ones I've been too in the Seattle/Tacoma area are Emerald Water Anglers in Seattle and Puget Sound Fly in Tacoma. I've also done some stuff with South Sound Fly Fishers.

As for places to fish, I'm still pretty new here, so can't help you there.

Welcome to the area. I’m from further south in Portland, but you might want to reset your expectations from trout and steel to lakes and salt. Steelhead returns to PS and OP rivers have been low for years, with a lot of pressure. However, you have src and salmon from the beaches on the sound. I know a lot of guys who fish the lakes around Seattle for trout.

You do have the Yakima, klickitat, and Deschutes on the east side of the cascades for trout and steel. You might also check out Washington fly fishing. Lots of info there.

Welcome to the PNW. I live in Seattle, however, mostly spend my time chasing trout. Emerald water anglers is probably the best shop for info on steelhead and salmon in my opinion. Patrick’s flyshop is my go to because of location. Both shops are great. As far as beer goes the opportunities are endless up here. Dm me if you want more info or want to grab a beer and talk shop. Good luck on the move.
