8wt for Smallmouth?

Been drooling over the BPS Heat outfits for sometime. My local place has the 8wt 4 piece rod for $99. I know that's normal price. Been fishing for lots of smallmouth on my local creeks and river lately, I know that seems like a lot of rod, but my friends and I have caught 19"+ fish that put a workout on a medium heavy casting rod.

I feel like the shorter 7'10" rod will hurt cast distance, but I've cast baits 6 feet from my kayak and caught decent fish. The shorter rod would definitely be less of a hassle floating under all the overgrowth we get in the summer.

What kind of size flies would I be looking at throwing with an 8wt? I figure it'd be to chase monsters! Thanks in advance for your thoughts! Edit: Also maybe the St Croix Mojo Bass in 7wt?

Generally the ideal fly rods for bass are 6-8 weights, so a 7 or 8 would be fine. It allows you to toss big, wind resistant flies like poppers or large streamers even in the wind. Also, they help you muscle fish out of weeds and all the other nasty stuff bass like to hide in. A 7 foot 10 inch rod is quite short, but if you’re not fishing big water I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

I use a 9ft 6wt for river smallies and haven't had any issues. Am able cast big enough flies with no problem and turn good fish even in the current.

With fly fishing feeling almost like a sport designed to make you buy a new rig for everything here are my two cents.

The 7,10 rod is going to be fine for casting poppers and other surface flies moderate distances on floating line. It’ll probably be quite accurate too bc of the short length. That being said, that rod is going to be a nightmare if you decide you want to toss streamers on sinking line.

A 9ft 8wt really is the sweet spot since it can do both. It’s much easier to be accurate with a long rod than to throw heavy gear long with a short rod.

The mojo is a great rod for bass and they are also very affordably priced.
