Shoulda kept that one. Flatheads are the only catfish that are still great to eat at large sizes.

That's a very old fish. They have a lot of contaminates. And bigger they are, the more fry they make. I say release all flatheads bigger than 5? 10lbs that way they can still be around. Unlike some other species that are getting harder to catch.

Depends on the fishery, but a 44 pound flathead will probably be around 8-9 years old. It's a long time for a catfish, but it's not like these things are orange roughy, which take decades to reach sexual maturity. But flatheads and blue cats are both very tasty at large sizes.
