I live in Northern California and I want to catch a skate. Any tips?

On the east coast in North Carolina, you just fishing for whatever fish you want to catch and you end up catching skates. Just curious, why do you want to catch them?

Bay Area? Try inside the bay, not the ocean. Squid, shrimp, baitfish along the bottom.
Get ready to get your bait picked off by a trillion crabs - especially if you use squid.

We would catch them all the time while surf fishing in socal. Any cut bait will work while fishing it on or 1 foot from the bottom; try sandy bottoms as opposed to a rocky shore. Be prepared to catch a few stingray, sharks, and an occasional halibut as well.
