What’s your fishing "rule of thumb" or "nugget of wisdom"?
...that always holds true and where did you hear it? I’ll start.
When you buy a lure, always buy two. That way if the fish are hitting and you lose it, you’ll have a back up to tie on.
My friend who got me into bass fishing told me this on our first excursion to BassPro 15 years ago. I can’t count the number of times he’s been right.

Always bring Canadian nightcrawlers as a backup. It's not as much fun but it could be the difference between putting bass on the boat or going home skunked.

”Find the cover and you’ll find the fish”
I read that some where while studying this sport. That’s what I do every time I go out. Look for drops points and weeds.
Having well over 60 years fishing knowledge to tap as needed I would like to pass this on to beginners or experts. Work on a technique That works on every type of fish in fresh or salt water. This one always works for me. I fish rivers most of the time these days. I use the longest rod I can get away with for several good reasons. If I'm into a monster I can place 5 or 6 foot of the rod into the water to prevent the fish from jumping. I can also cast a great distance effortlessly. With the longer rod you own the river. For starters try my never fail technique. Use the lightest jig head you can get away with. I never use more than 1/4 ounce for 90% of my fishing. If you need more weight use a split shot or two or three to get you down to the fish. I use rods from 8 to 91/2 feet in length, This allows me to place the extra weight up to 5 feet above the jig head never close to the jig head. Cast out and allow your bait to fall to where you want it. I count to five or ten most of the time. Shake your rod hand as if you were recovering from a bad night at the club then stop for a second and start over. As for a bait to use this one will take everything that swims. Senko 4 and 5 inch in colors black, green pumpkin, and green pumpkin with a chartreuse tail. This is a no B.S. technique you can teach yourself in and hour or less. Try it you'll like it.
Never give up ,and keep it simple !!!
never miss a chance to go fishing.
Greenjeans;
And if you buy 2 lures and neither one works you can add them to your collection as I have been doing for almost 70 years....Wow! I sure have a lot of junk!!! LOL
BE FLEXIBLE!!!!!!!!!! When what you are doing is not producing, make a change! Change your retrieve, your bait color, your bait, your location or your activity (just kidding!)
Honestly, be ready to try something different.
Fish whenever you can, don't always wait for the perfect conditions
Came up with this "rule of thumb" about 45 years ago.
When it comes to fishermen, opinions are like noses. Everybody has one.
Now, all of you know that "noses" is not the word normally used in this expression. Nonetheless, I am sure all of you get the message.
Cheers! Richard
I always fish very high water conditions. I fish in places that aren't normally fishable. Walking paths that are normally several yards from the water and several feet higher. This is my favorite time to catch monsters. On one exceptional outing I was on to a nice fish almost every cast. This rule of thumb always works for me.
Try to fish with you face toward the sun so you don't cast a shadow but if you have to try to make your shadow as small as possible. The best time to go fishing is when you get to go.
