Looks like its in the Clupidae family. Definitely not a skipjack though. If I had to guess I would assume it is a type of herring or shad.

Showed my dad and he guessed skipjack before I posted here. I fish these waters a lot and catching these are really rare. Off to Google your guesses to see if that's it. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

No problem! Skipjack are in the Thunnus genus, which are identifiable by rows of finlets lining their caudal peduncle (tail) and long pectoral fins that fold into grooves and act as a hydrofoil, similar to that of a plane. If you do catch a skipjack, please share!!

Absolutely. Know what they usually go for?

( the reason I'm asking what this is is because I'm wanting to start a photo collage of me catching every fish possible in middle tn )

I have not personally caught a skipjack, but I know they are very quick and aggressive. A smaller surface popper or something flashy might do the trick. I would check out recommendations from other threads on google.

Skipjack tuna have those characteristics. Tennessee is not known for its tuna fisheries.

There is a freshwater fish that's also known as a skipjack, which I think is exactly what OP has. It is in the herring family, you got that bit correct.

I catch these guys (or a fish very similar) on lake Eufaula in Alabama. We always call them shads though I’m not sure of the proper terminology

Pretty sure it is indeed a skipjack. Outstanding catfish bait.

Skipjack Herring...also called "Tennessee Tarpon." Bloody; don't eat.
