Surf rods are nice for heavier surf to get distance and keep your line above the waves, but a normal 7'ish spinning rod is fine for fishing the cuts closer in or wading. 20/30lb braid (lower diameter is better for not getting yanked all over by wind and waves), 1oz or so Carolina rig on calmer days, 2-3oz double drop rig with pyramid sinker on heavier days.

Live bait is best, but small pieces of frozen shrimp for whiting/pompano work well, and frozen squid is pretty good in strips that have a bit of action and will stay on the hook better. The exception is bluefish, which hunt topwater in schools and will slam shallow running lures or spoons ripped past the schools ridiculously fast. They're a blast to catch if you find a school. Okay eating if you bleed them right away and put them right on ice, cook that day. Pompano, Whiting, Grunts are all good eating, as are Reds, Specs, and Grouper if you find them. Make sure to take a fish measure as all have slot or minimums last I checked. Crabbing can be fun as well if you want to give that a shot in a marshy area.

Licenses can be purchased on line, here's the regs https://www.outdooralabama.com/fishing/saltwater-fishing-creel-and-size-limits

No prob... forgot to mention, rinse your gear really well each use, especially if it is freshwater gear, and then take it apart and clean and re grease when home... salt likes to eat a lot of metals up, and can still gunk up saltwater rated gear pretty good. Even some of my saltwater reels were corroded in joints or drag systems where salt got in and sat for a while.

Fish the pier. They'll teach you everything you need to know if you're polite and willing to learn.

I hope to do that someday but for now I will have to spend time with the family on the beach. :)

A RrushingTroll did a super job for you, the only things he forgot was the sunscreen, if the sun is out, a beach chair, rod holders and a cooler full of beer. Check out Perdido Pass.
