How do you fish waters you’ve never fished before

So do you typically start with using some type of senko since they seem like the go too for bass. Or do you use a bait that you think most fish will go after? I have some blade baits that I love to chuck and I think any fish would hit em.

I’m fishing freshwater in northern Florida for the first time. I went to a lake by lake George and got skunked. I’ve been going to a high pressured pond and I haven’t gotten much action there either.

A lot of guys at that pond throw a senko so of course I am too. I really don’t like to use love bait since I feel crappy since I catch and release. Plus live bait almost seems cheating to me haha.

Anyway what are some of your tricks?

I throw lures that fits the area and I know if it has worked at other places first. As I get more comfortable with where I’m fishing I start to experiment and finds what works better or worse.

I throw what I'm the most comfortable with first and if the Bass are still finicky I throw the stuff which is supposed to work on the color of the water and temperature and more importantly the season.

Senkos are my go to everywhere I go to for the first time. If they are not biting in one spot that means I need to keep walking and casting because if there's Bass they'll bite. I also change colors of senkos and the rig set ups on the regular to see which presentation get their attention.

Texas rig senko is my favorite.

I try to find a promising spot and change my lures if needed. I check the depth, if there are rocks, weeds, bait fish, submerged trees.... And I change lures in fonction of the situation. For example if there is bait fish, I try do imitate them by size, shape and color. If there are lillipads, frog is a go. Crawfish, Crawfish imitation.

I start with a bait that can cover water quickly. Rooster tails, spinners, lipless crankbaits. Things that are quick cast and retrieve. After a while ill change it up to slower presentations and trying to pinpoint fishy looking areas.

Over time you kind of develop lists in your head of certain baits that work well for certain situation/species. Senkos are a good example to start with for bass! Just keep trying new things when you can and once in a while u will strike gold

So do you typically start with using some type of ... (show quote)

1. Research the lake on the web.
2. Visit the lake in question and talk to fisherman there

I always go with my favorite lure that catches multiple species. A 1/4 oz Black body/gold blade Panther Martin spinner. That or a Rapala Countdown. You can fish those 2 lures on top water or down on the bottom.
I had just moved to Idaho back in 2015 from Arizona. I fished from my kayak and was casting and retrieving my Panther Martin. This is what I caught:

My first fish in Idaho :-) September 2015

Thanks, Steve! There is some great smallmouth bass fishing in Idaho. If you get a chance to fish the Salmon River when you are up there hunting, you will know what I mean :-)
