Hi FF! Got a question for you. I can catch those hardheads all day long in the Bay. I've eaten them several times. One day I threw one in a bucket of fresh water and about an hour later I saw what appeared to be long skinny red worms in the bucket as through they were exiting what they knew was a dying fish. Haven't kept one since. Any thoughts?
All the cats I catch hardheads & sail cats alike I put in a 5 gallon bucket of fresh water when I get home before I clean them and I've never saw anything like that. Once in a while I'll cut the stomach open to see what they've eaten. The weirdest thing I've seen is a large cat fish with a ramora hung on it's belly and it didn't fall off till both were in the grass.
Steve57: I have personally never seen what you have described. Could it be the fish had eaten some worms and regurgitated them? AS far as I know hardheads will eat anything. Just Sayin...RJS
Hi fish4fun, I’m in Spokane, WA right now (got dumped on yesterday with 5-1/2 inches of snow ☹️), so much for local-fishing this weekend! I too, fish Venice, FL during the winter months, we’ve had a condo for many years down there but only recently got into surf fishing. This year I’m looking to try the Sunshine Skyway Bridge for the first time. Sharkey’s is always crowded and I’ve never seen any really “good” catches from there. Hopefully we can get together this winter and try our luck.....☘️ Jeretired
We should. I’ll reach out when I get down there late Dec / early Jan
Well, get to Fl as quick as you can. Just Sayin...RJS
The Spanish macs are in on the Gulf coast beaches in SW Fl!
They’re fun to catch. More often or not though their teeth cut my line. What do you use for a leader?

You HAVE fished these tough guys with that comment. Thursday between my buddy and me lost a dozen rigs by being cut off. Went home and came back armed the next day, 20# wire leader. That's when we nailed them. The macs showed no indifference to the new leader, bit the same as fluorocarbon. Almost seemed unfair...almost.

Assuming you're in Polk County and the SW region of FL, a good tip would be to release any Reds or Snook you hook. Get caught keeping, fine is as much as $2500
