I bought some bobbers from Bass Pro Shop in Macon and I've learned to appreciate them a lot. The only drawback is that they don't let me keep my lines tight as I like them to be.....
Fishing a bobber on a lake, you're kinda at the mercy of the wind and the waves - you don't get a lot of control. Gotta stay at it, try to mend your line a little, reel it in, cast it back out. Stream fishing's a different story, the current allows you to control it much more easily. I used to bobber fish for catfish quite a lot and I found that the Shimano Baitrunner was a perfect reel for this type of drift fishing. Let the bobber drift with light drag on the runner, increase the drag to stop the drift, mr. whiskers can take the bait and run with it, hit the handle and he's hooked. Pretty slick. It works well on a lake also because the fish can take the bait and run with it, you don't really need to maintain the tightness in your line. Takes a little getting used to, but it works.

I have the shimano baitrunner 3500. It is an awesome reel. I caught many stripers in Mayberry Slew in the Delta out by Antioch.
I have two of em - one was a present to my SIL a while back, but he no longer fishes so gave it back to me. What a guy. Yeah, they're nice. Especially for drift fishing for cats and steelies.

I just saw your new reel & rod, very nice. But I wanted to say get well and fast as you can. I had lower back surgery in June 2018. It went well. I hope your back to full recovery soon.
I played golf 6 months later and never looked back. Get well.

Well thank you. You won't catch me on a golf course though. My loft keeps me away. I'll stick with fishing.

I found out I’d rather be on the shore or in our boat. It’s much more satisfying !

Welcome Lonny ! I don’t use bobbers. I’m a lures, spinners, crankbaits and plastics guy. Keeps me busy. Not sure I like the sitting and watching.
Keep’em tight.

Slip bobbers are perfect when fish are suspended at a particular depth. Set the stop on the line at the depth desired and you're all set. Mark
The right shape and size plus style make all the difference.......different bobbers for different conditions
