Looking for advice on fishing pole.

Hey all, my father's birthday is coming up and I decided to buy him a fishing pole. He mostly fishes in creeks for bass, sunfish, and occasionally trout. I don't really know much about fishing (I sometimes go with him, but I'm not as into it as he is.) So I was looking for advice on what kind of pole to get him. My price range is about $150-200 at most.

Get him a giftcard to a nearby sporting goods store instead. Or go with him to pick something out. Rods are like cars or underwear. Everyone has their own preference and trying to guess what he likes without really knowing is not ideal. You provide the means and let him buy to his taste.

Couldn't agree more. Let your father pick it out. Make a fun trip out of it. Go to the store together. Browse together. Have fun with it. That will ensure he gets exactly what he's looking for and not stuck with a rod that you picked for him.

I def agree with the gift card recommendation! As a fisherman, you wanna be able to pick out your own stuff just because you know exactly what you want and it can be a bit different for everyone.

$40 should cover the purchase for rod and reel combined at bass pro or Academy.

You must not fish a lot with quality equipment if you think $40 will get you a nice setup. A nice setup is easily over $120 combo. I’m in aggreement with taking him out to store. He can show you some things that he likes and it might spark an interest in you going with him more often. Dads like that, I know I like it when my kids go with me. And I like taking my dad out fishing.

Zebco makes some great rod and reels for about $14- $30 dollars. You don't need a fancy pole for these fish and I fish with such a rod and reel and recommend at least a reel with 15 pound test line.I have caught 7 lb bass and 10 lb catfish with mine.Hope this helps

Yep and you can ride a moped or ride a Harley Davidson. Really you must decide on your own. A cane pole has caught me many a fish growing up, but I also own some serious offshore saltwater gear that cost nearly a thousand bucks for a rod and reel. Paid over $300.00 for the rods alone because you can not tackle fish that size with a cane pole, lol, or I would. You got you answer above several times......buy a gift card, for as much as you are comfortable with. $150.00 will buy a fine combo, and your Dad will be happy picking out the one he wants......really happy!
