I used to fish with my dad all the time when I was younger but haven’t in years just bought a house with a river literally in my backyard and see people fly fishing all the time for trout… Long story short I have no idea how to fly fish is there another way I could catch the trout besides flyfishing?

Try light spin tackle with a rooster tail.

Rooster tails tend to work well if not the best for trout when spin fishing - I have also had some luck with senkos (I think that’s how you spell it - they are those rubber worm lures) as well as occasionally getting bites on shiners and small spoons. I would assume worms/night crawlers would work since they go for senkos but I have actually never had luck catching trout with worms.

Inline spinners, powerbait ball with a few light split shot weights slowly fished from upstream to downstream, if the fish only want to eat flies you can just use spinning gear with a float and fly (although you may get laughed at but who cares).

Just make sure it's not a fly fishing only section before you go in there with spinning stuff. Fly fishing is a hell of a lot more fun and satisfying. It also takes a lot more skill. If you are up for the challenge learn more about it and try it out. Alot of places have free classes to teach you.

If bait is allowed, drift a worm through the fast water with a small hook and a big split shot a foot up from it. Let it hang up on ricks and bounce the bottom and give it an occasional tug, trout will gobble it up.

This sounds like a good plan, it’s a vast moving river (actually called the swift river lol)

Nothing better for trout then a little red worm.

Check the regulations, it may be a stream for fly fishing only. There are many you tubes on fly fishing. It is a great sport.

Try Ultra light, spinning rod and reel combo. Reel with 2 - 4 lb mono, 4 lb fluorocarbon leader. Use # 10 hook with one # 5 split shot set at one foot above the hook. Use Berkley Power bait (Charteuse)., or use Mepps spinner 0 w/o the split shot.

I found the best way to get all the trout you want is to use lead-weighted M-2000's. The trout will come to the surface so fast that you will need a team to help net them all. This technique also worked extremely well for monster catfish below the Bengal at Lake of the Ozarks. Just be sure to thoroughly check for diver bouys before trying this technique. I landed one a few years ago that only had one eye and the game warden told me it was called a Voit. When you land one and use pliers to remove the hook, these guys will flop all over and scream like hell.

Well,,,, I don't know if I would use goodlittle's suggestion, I know that it works because when I was a kid, my fat, old neighbor, Ben, threw a stick of dimonite into a trout stream and his little dog,"pepper" jumped in to retrieve the "stick", which he always did. "Jez", Ben said, "the faster I ran the faster pepper ran". Ben was fine, but pepper went to the big woods in the sky.

What I would do, and I'm a fly fisher, is first of all, check the regulation to see if you may use bait during this time of the year. Usually this time of the year it is catch & release, barbless atificial only. If bait is legal, stand below the rapids/ripple and toss a nightcrawler/worm up into the seams and let it flow naturally down to you. If it stops, set the hook. Trout are very lethargic in cold water, if you don't put the bait in their mouth they won't take it and if they do, they will usually just sit there with it. so, you will probably not see the take. Depending, on the current, and the trout will not be in the current because it takes to much energy but in the seams and below the stronger current. I would doubt if you would need a weight, but maybe. You want that crawler to be as natural as possible. Tight Lines & Good luck!

Willing to bet Pepper never knew what hit him. When we wanted good fish dinners in Vietnam, we used concussion grenades to harvest them. We always shared our catch with the villagers and boy, did the beg us for grenades before we pulled out. Se we gave them 2 cases. Hopefully, they shared their catches with the three neighboring villages. Just wonder how many were VC regulars. Between their black pajamas and those stupid pointed hats, you really could never tell. By the time they got the cases open, we were already airlifted.

By the way, when I was in high school coming from a poor family I used to fish the Ohio River about 18 miles down-river from Pittsburgh. Had a neighbor kid across the street who like to fish our local strip mines with night crawlers for bass. He saw something in a Popular Mechanics magazine showing how to build this box with wires and long leads to stick in the ground and use electricity to shock night crawlers out of the ground. By now, you are probably getting some idea of what happened.

Anyway, he got this thing built and drove 2 copper rods about 1/4 inch in diameter about 6 ft. down into his front yard. Then, he connected two long leads to those two rods. He took the box (which I presume contained a step-up transformer) and set it on his front porch. He then proceeded to use a garden hose to soak his front yard. He hollered across the street for me to come see what he was about to do to get night crawlers. I came across the street and stood on the sidewalk in front of his house wearing tennis shows. Then next hing he did was kick off his flip flops on the front porch and turned the unit on. You could hear a little buzzing, and then, all of a sudden, night crawlers began emerging from the ground. My friend was so thrilled to see what was happening that he grabbed an empty coffee can and ran out onto the lawn where he was immediately electrocuted to death. His dad turned off the power and called the police and an ambulance, but it was too late. He was pronounced dead at the scene and I got myself about 15 dozen night crawlers. Figured I might as well try to make something good out of a bad situation. By the way, you don't ever want to be asleep in bed when a massive flash flood hits.
