I’m fairly new with salmon fishing and I was using a spinning reel with a spoon and weight attached on the line.
I made a few casts and everything was good. But then for one cast, as I was reeling back I felt that the line was lighter and realized the weight and spoon had come off. The knots were made well by my boyfriend. The line was not frayed at the end and appeared to be a straight cut.
I felt no tug on rocks or branches or anything. The river I was fishing at was in Chilliwack, BC which had steelhead and trout. Does anyone know what happened to my line and why it was cut like that? Usually when my line breaks I feel a tug from it being stuck in rocks or something. Please let me know!
Thank you.

Could you have cast it off? If your weight/lure is too heavy for the line you can accidentally break the line casting the lure.

Check the eyelits on the rod. There could be a sharp spot the line is coming in contact with.

The line may have been previously damaged by abrasion against rocks or something, and the line just parted when you started reeling.

It could have been many things, retie and try again. If it breaks again it could be a flaw in the line, cheap line, poor knots or a bad tip top or 1st guide, to much weight for the poundage of the line, a toothy fish. Whatever! Not a major problem unless it is a faulty guide. Then you will have to replace the guide. Tight Lines!
could have been a fish with sharp teeth. I don't know if you have any of those, but it has happened to me.
or....get a new boyfriend who knows knots... :-) sorry; couldn't help myself!

I'm pretty good at tying knots, I tie flies.
