I am just starting to learn this fishing game after 15yrs in coaching high school football and basketball so I am looking for some tips. I am going fishing at the pier in west port WA. I am not sure what gear i need i have the rod and reel but not sure what else i need. I want to catch fish i can take home and throw in the pan for dinner.
So any help is welcome

Football35: Welcome to the Fishing Forum/Stage. You have found us, a bunch of all ages and from all over the country and even other countries. We represent a little knowledge, sage wit, experience, and a lot of Bull!

Have you ever taken your rod and reel, a hook and soaked a bait off the pier? Since i am at least 1,000 miles away, and fishing is quite different here, I'm probably not a lot of help. But whatever the fish eat there will be your best bet to catch them. 1. Live bait, 2. Dead bait, 3, lures that immitate that live bait.

Hopefully, there will be others along with better suggestions. Just Sayin....RJS

Wow! I knew it was a long way, and after 1,000 I quit counting. At 2,400 miles it might as well be Alaska. Just Sayin...RJS

Welcome to the Forum, FB. First of all thanks, for working with our snotty nosed kids. Secondly, fill in your location of the profile page above, you will receive more replies, The city will be just fine, You said that you were going to fish the pier at West Point, WA. but, you didn't say where you were from. Thirdly, go down to the pier and take a walk up and down the pier and get to know the locals, make a note of what they are using for a rod and reel, what bait or rigs they are using, what their target fish are. The pier is a wonderful place to be, nice and friendly and very informative. Tell them that you are just starting to fish and they will take it from there, in most cases. A trip to the local tackle shop may also be a good idea, not a big box store, a local tackle shop. Also, do you have a buddy or a former player that fishes, ask him if he will help you out. As long as it's not the blind leading the blind, you will learn something. If you have never fished before, it is going to be a long row to hoe, and it will take some time and money, but it will be the best time and money that you have spent.

I have always said that anyone that coaches for twenty years is crazy. My avator is a picture of me accepting a placque for being inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Yep, I'm definately crazy.

Welcome FB35! Fly, you've probably said before that the plaque is for wrestling Hall of Fame, congratulations, but I've always thought it was for some kind of fishing award. Did you coach wrestling? It's great to be honored by your peers.

Welcome FB35.
Being I’m mostly a freshwater fishing person I can’t help much but I do know a couple of things. First make sure you wash your gear throughly after each time you fish in salt and second know your regulations for every area you fish. Washington has some screwy regs. Good luck and take pictures. We love pictures.
