Nice fish! But I hope you CPR. That fish probably’s fifteen years old and would be the mother of a lot of baby blues.
I personally only keep um under 15lbs.
Everyone makes their own choices.

People get upset with us here in Idaho for keeping the big jumbo perch too. What they don’t realize is those big fish eat WAY more baby fish than the smaller ones so it’s a catch 22. The local game warden here told me its good to take quite a few of the bigger ones and that allows more to grow bigger plus they’re near the end of their life cycle when they get that big anyway. The reason the world record jumbo perch is only 3 pounds is because they die in that range of old age. They only live so long. It’s the same with big catfish. The smaller ones are better eating but the really big ones, of any species, won’t be around much longer anyway. Another thing most people don’t think about is fish eat their own babies. So a big cat like that will devour most of her young ones anyway. A food source is a food source. It’s not like a fish weens their young and protects them till they get a certain age. Once they hatch they’re on their own. And most times they’re just food for the egg layers.

And, many fish that are old tend to have less viable eggs, no longer contributing to the population in general. Larger fish Are able to have more eggs but eventually it’s a case of diminishing returns. Knowing the upper limits of the spawning abilities of different species is a good thing to know .
