How much did it weigh? Did you get a chance to weigh it? You might have said it in your post, but I might have missed it.

We estimated it weighed bout 40 pounds. Was about 4 feet from wing tip to wing tip.
He caught it up in that slough and it was really shallow where he hooked it. It ran almost to the mouth of that slough and back to where we were. Finally got it close enough to get a gaff in it and get the lure out.
That's when I snapped the pic.

If you hooked that bat ray in the yak , I'm not sure we could get it in. Marshall was using a really heavy rod and it took him bout 15 min to land it. It was pullin the boat around even then.

Hi Steve, I've caught some bat rays on San Diego South Bay the biggest was about 3 to 4ft wing span that pulled my 15ft smokercraft alum deep V around for about 15 to 20 minutes before I could get it up to see what it was, hoping for a big Halibut, I've never caught one in the mouth, always snagged in the wing and they fight twice as hard that way. Using a ball head jig with plastics not bait, I think they are just curious as to what it is. The rig I was using was a 5-6 Phoenix boron rod light duty with a pinicleDeadbolt reel with 8lb test. Once I saw it wasn't a big halibut I snapped it off. I wish I could talk my wife into moving North to much better freshwater fishing than in SD area. I've fished in the Siearas and on the Kern river in past years. I Sold my Skeeter tri hull in 2004 and quit fishing the lakes here, pay to launch, pay to fish and don't catch much anymore. Been fishing mostly alone for the last 2-1/2 years, one friend moved to Navarre Fl and the other one moved to Az. Got to find someone in the SD area to fish with. I can still launch and put it back on the trailor myself at 76 years young with a 40 year old mind but not as agile as I once was, much easier with one in the boat and one in the truck. I'm using my inflatable life vest full time now and wear the deadman line on my wrist incase I fly out of the boat. I'm also installing a rope ladder on the transom so if I get thrown over I've got a way to get back in. Not many people on the bay during the week when I fish. I would never eat any fish out of our polluted bay but fun to catch and no cleaning either. Larry W.

Hey buddy. That's what this ray was/did. It was bout 4 feet from wing tip to wing tip. Pulled our 16 foot Klamath around a little bit. Finally got it to the boat and gaffed it so we could get our lure back. Bout a 15 min fight.
Have you ever tried to get together with LarryM?
He lives down there and fishes the SD area.

I have thought about that but don't know how to do much more on my iPad than looking things up and reply to things on the fishing stage. I thought I heard him say something in the past about some med problem keeping him from fishing, I might be wrong about that. I don't know how to PM?? I'm an old dog and have trouble learning new tricks. I still have an old flip phone dinosaur I've had since the 80s for when I was in business for my wife to get ahold of me about business, way better than the pager I had before. If I can figure how to get ahold of him I will. He's about the same distance from the ramp as I am, about 45 minutes for me to get there and should be about the same for him. LW.

To PM somebody, you just click on their screen name by their avatar and the link to send a Private Message comes up. OR you can go to the top of the page and click on private messages.

OH, I forgot to tell y'all. THREE /four times we had a TRIPLE on that we landed all 3. One of the times 1 of them got off and it turned into a double which we had about 6 or 7 doubles.
It was so great. Marshall isn't that good a fisherman, he just doesn't go as often as we do , and he caught probly 20+ fish today. Maybe closer to 25.
I was SO glad for him. He's never had a day like that before.
It truly warmed my heart that he had such a wonderful day. Plus that huge bat ray.

Great day Saw, congrats! By the way, I wasn’t buying the skunk story at all. I was born at night, but it wasn’t last night! 😉

OK. We got out there and fished from sunrise till sunset and never got a bite.

I think those days are planned for all of us. One day you can’t keep em off the hook, the next day you can’t pay em to bite. Like they have specific days they come to work. Lol

There were 3 of us today. Brad , a friend of his and me.
We got out to the river and in the water bout 0715. Motored out to the fishin grounds and got there little before 0730. At 0730 I catch the first fish, bout 17 inches. It was nothing but on after that.
By 0900 we had at least a dozen apiece, but only 1 on the stringer.
By 1000 we had caught probly 70+fish and had 4 nice ones on the stringer.
I hadn't kept any yet so I finally catch the last 2 and we're done by 1030.
Off the water by 1100.
Brad caught the biggest striper at 7+ pounds and the smallest at 3.
Marshall, his friend, caught a 6 and a 5 pounder.
I caught a 6 and a 4 pounder.
Our total weight for 6 fish was 31 pounds.
All in all we probly caught 75 or so fish.
The whopper of the day was a bat ray that Marshall caught that probly weighed 40 pounds. Fought it for bout 15 min just so we could get the lure back.
What a great day.

Hey Steve, I knew immediately the first was a lie cause you said you “fished from sunup to sundown” and when you posted , it was still hours from sundown in California. You gave it away, buddy. 😉🤥. LOL
