Portable fishing rod suggestions?

There’s a lot of ponds on my bicycle trail I’d like to throw a cast into. Does anyone have any rod suggestions that I could fit into my backpack? Preferably on the cheap side as it’s just a mess around rod.

I have a telescopic abu Garcia that i found on Amazon for cheap. Im pretty rough on it but its all in one piece still. Ive probably pulled the most fish with it honestly just because its always in my truck or bag when im going somewhere.

If you're on the gentle'ish side - telescopics can last a long time - however they have 2 main problems if you are rough with them ...

a piece can get jammed making it longer than desired - when this happens to the tip, the tip tends not to last too long

a piece can shoot right out all together - near impossible to get it back in without damaging it such that it flies out all the time

If you're careful and not wrestling monsters 24 hrs a day a telescopic is an excellent backpacking / cycling rod - but it doesn't take much abuse to break one.

For instance around home a telescopic for trout fishing - with everything 2 lbs or less will last forever - unless you smash it against a tree because you're only catching a few a day, a couple times a week (day and possession limits - if you adhere to such things) ...

while the same rod would get destroyed by a summer of mackerel fishing - fish are the same size or with a few 3 lbs - but you'll catch 100 or more a day - as often as you can catch a high tide ... between the strain, saltwater and blood and scales - it tends to eat rods.

I've got an Ugly Stik GX2 4-piece rod. It's solid - they make them in 6' and 6'6" versions and they break down pretty small. Great if you don't want a telescopic rod. Cheap too, they're like $32 right now.

Just make sure you push each section on tight.

Take a look at Cabelas ‘Stowaway’ line
Have you considered a rack for your bike? Google this topic and you will see no less than 100 different ideas on how to transport a rigged and ready rod anywhere your bike can go. Amazing what some guys can do with a few feet of pvc pipe. I have a rack that mounts just above the brake arm on my beach cruiser and holds the handles in a way that two rods can be carried without being in your way...just gotta watch out for the occasional low hanging branch. Tackle in the front basket with a small cooler and a vest full of flies and I’m gone all day.
