Last I heard, it was dead. Definately no corvina and the dead tilapia were stinking up the place.

Like you I fished it years ago - probably 35 or so. Only went there once, it was a nasty place, absolutely the dreariest most dismal place I've ever visited in California. Towns that were laid out, streets made, and then never built. The place reeked of dead fish and unfulfilled dreams. Flies and midges made it almost impossible to do anything but defend yourself. Tilapia and corvina were plentiful at that time. So what? I found some irrigation canals around there out in the desert and caught some bass. Never went back to the Sea.

Maybe somebody loves the place and I was runnin it down pretty hard? If that's somebody's idea of a garden spot? If you want to buy some el cheapo California real estate that may be the place to go.

Another fun thing about the salton sea. Family took our travel trailer to camp there. The wind came up so strong it caused the sand to pit the mirrors on both sides of the truck. Think orange peel.

From Fontana. Fished there in mid 60’s. Corvina were plentiful and tasty. Moved to Va. in ‘71. Been by the sea numerous times in the last 35 years. Place is kinda depressing. Could say the same for Fontana. Was such a nice little steal mill town when I was growing up. Would not want to live there now.

I was raised in Southern California back in the 1950's. At that time, the Salton Sea was really being hyped by the developers, and a lot of people thought that it was going to be a paradise in the desert. There was a lot of excitement about vacationing there, and I suppose that it had a lot to offer - back then.

Flash forward to the 2010's, and my job took me past the Salton Sea many times. It's DEPRESSING! The towns are mostly abandoned houses with open doors and broken windows. You can almost feel the broken dreams and despair. At the down wind side of the lake (and yes, there's a lot of wind), there's a lot of grayish/yellowish foam on the water and the stench of dead fish everywhere. If you get near the lake away from (what used to be) towns, there's just desolation. I go fishing to relax and be happy, so I won't go there. And NO WAY would I eat anything that came out of that water! If you aren't depressed by what you find there, you're one of the world's greatest optimists!

I just read an article written in 2015 about catching Mozambique tilapia from the Sea. They were plentiful then. If you go, Old timer, let us know how it is. I don't think you're gonna have much company out there.

Don't bother. I really think it is dead. The stench can be overwhelming. Won't eat anything from that place.
