My wife caught her first sturgeon today on the Columbia River. This one is 44 inches and 22 lbs. Oregon Gives very few days for retention now and they give short notice when they come up. Today you had to land one between 44 inches and 50 inches to keep it so this one just sneaked into the boat. When I first started fishing for them the size limit was 36 inches to 72 inches and we could fish for them year around/

Soooo 😎 cool. That’s one fish I’ve never caught or even seen.
Nice fish. And some delicious meat. Thanks for sharing.
This old man thinks that sturgeon is the best eating fish there is! That fish was a keeper, and so is your Mrs, with her fishing skills!
We used to catch smaller ones in Red River. I have no idea if they still exist there. Just Sayin...RJS

Well it's definitely the fish that doesn't taste like fish. Or cook like it either.

Nice job and congrats. I remember those day when we could keep a few too. Days long past. There’s lots of sturgeon in the Columbia still. I catch lots of them incidentally throughout the summer fishing for squawfish. I don’t know why they have them so heavily regulated now.

Same down here CF. They're really not that scarce and if you're out fishin for stripers and salmon in the Sac or the Feather, you're more than likely gonna catch some sturgeon too. Limit is pretty much the same here. 48 to 72 and 1 per person. I understand the over 72, those are the breeders.

Im guessing that fire in Mollala missed you!
Thank God! The smoke has cleared that rain was a blessing! I wasnt paying attention. Didnt know there was a retention day! Here is a pic from a retention day last year! My stepson.

That’s what I’ve heard too Spirit. I don’t fish for them any more but I sure do catch a bunch. In the Columbia and Snake River.
There do seem to be plenty of sturgeon in the Columbia system. The last two years they have allowed minimal days for retention. This year only two at this point. My wife really had to work to get that one in, it didn't seem to want to come home with us. The smoke from the fires has only just cleared, we were evacuated, the fire got within about 3 miles of our house.

Congratulations to your wife Mel, that's a beautiful fish. Good job convincing him to come for a boat ride. Thanks for sharing.
