Hi I’m Matt from Belmont NC Lake Wylie. My son (13) and I have been trying to learn this bass fishing game but all we have discovered so far is how difficult those guys are to catch. We have been out a couple mornings lately throwing crank bates but only been able to catch gar and channel cats. Any tips for lake Wylie and this time of year would be much appreciated. Thanks
Matt: sounds like you are making a good start, keep going and you will learn more tricks as you go. Have you tried using a plastic worm on a Texas rig, or Carolina rig? Take your time and fish them slow might change your luck! Just Sayin...RJS
Try a plastic worm on a wacky rig. There are several YouTube videos showing you how to fish this way.

Welcome to the Forum, Matt, sorry I'm not a bass fisherman but a lot of members are, you should hear from them soon.
Agree on the wacky worm. Hard to beat.
They will give you a general idea on what the fish are doing

Welcome Matt,to the stage. Don't know about your particular lake, but if there are weeds, try to fish the edges of them. Either a Texas rigged worm, or soft jerkbait like a fluke. Also try a Weedless frog right on top of the weed bed. Are you fishing from shore or a boat? If you're in a boat, look for dropoffs from a shallow area to deeper water, and fish along the drop. Good luck, and post pictures of your success.

Welcome to The Stage, Matt
Enjoy your stay with us, and good luck with the tips offered.
Thanks Fredfish yes we have a boat and depth finder so will try the drop offs. Also will research the Wacky and Carolina rigged worms. Hope to have some photos soon🙏
Also I'll second the wacky worms, it's been saving my bacon a few times this year.

Welcome Matt. We like pictures of gar and catfish too. Good advice above. Getting to where the bass are is as important as the bait. Work edges of weed beds, rocks, tree stumps and lay downs. Get good at casting close to structure. Good fishing.
Matt: I don’t know your druthers, but gars will give you as much tussle as a bass and if they are big, all you want! Some people even eat them. What can I say about catfish? Good luck! Just Sayin...RJS

When you're target is bass and you're catching gar and catfish? Count your blessings. They'e not that hard to catch and you'll figure it out. When you do post some photos. Welcome to the stage.

What you were just saying Mr. Samples is exactly what I was thinking and they take good pictures too.
