just messin' wit chu. That might be the Liparis liliifolia (Lily-leaved Twayblade) common in Minnesota but found in many states including NY. Maybe even in NC from where you hail.

Yep. I really thought this would be harder, I wanted to find a picture of one of the species that lives here But I couldn't find one.
