Hey all wanted to share a sad bit of news with you.
Detroit Lake here in Oregon has a special place in my heart. As a child growing up in San Diego, CA our family spent most vacations camping in Oregon. Detroit lake was always our favorite destination. I spent many great summers here with family. Fishing with my Dad and grandfather and aunts , uncles and cousins. As an adult I moved my family to Oregon from San Diego at the age of 28. Ive been here for the past 32 yrs. Detroit Lake has been one of my families favorite recreational areas for years and still my #1 lake to fish for both trout and Kokanee. Most of the fish pics that i have submitted on this site came from Detroit. I worked in sales for many years and my sales territory covered the town of Detroit and surrounding areas . I personally know mostly all the business owners in the area.
The "Beachie creek" fire that some of you may have seen on the news devastated this town. I have seen some photos on the news and sootken to some friends up there. I believe all of the businesses have been lost including both marinas. Many lake homes are gone and the fire is still not contained.
Please keep these folks in your thoughts and prayers!
Thanks!

Be safe, fellow Duck.... the fires are simply everywhere here in Oregon. And if you aren't nearby a fire, the smoke will find you anyway. Haven't really seen the Sun for two days here in the Rogue Valley. Only good news is that the humidity is up and wind is down, making the firefighters battle slightly less horrific.
I have always wanted to hit Detroit for the kokes .... I guess it won't be soon, maybe next year.
The destruction of memorable places is always heartbreaking, to be sure...I know first-hand.
Again, be safe, Bdub..... we're gonna need everyone healthy to get past this.

B06, I can not find the words of condolences for the lost of so many and their property. Prayers have been sent by so many of us that to say i am sorry for everyone's lost just does not seem like enough. I do wish All strength in the recovery and that in some way it will all work out to keep moving forward.

Thank You for the update and for the pic of the area you mention.

So sorry Bdub, what a tragic loss. Living here in Cal, I know what you are going through. Hasn't hit real close to us yet, but looking at the fire maps the fires are everywhere.

Thanks all! What i do know for sure is that the trees will grow back, the animals will reproduce and these are hearty folks that will rebuild thier homes and businesses.
The town itself was quite small. I would guess 250 people or so. Three stores, a motel, two restaurant s and two marinas. It was a quaint little mountain town.!

Mine too. I remember as a kid my parents took us up there as the dam was being built.
I fished there many times since and have done some family camping too. My favorite place to fish, especially in the fall.
I feel terrible for the people that live there, such a thing to go through.
It will never be the same again.

I know how you feel. I started fishing this lake with my dad around 1956. I've lived in the Portland area most of my life. It was barely over a week ago it seems that I was planning on bringing my boat to Detroit for a day trip to fish - to get at least a little fishing in before winter. I heard a few days ago that only 2 buildings were spared, one being the post office. This morning I hear that all of the town is gone, including the 2 marinas. Pretty sad, especially for those who lost everything, including businesses, jobs, homes, and of course family and friends. It was only 5 or 6 years ago the lake had been drawn down to just a trickle during a severe drought year that shut business down for the marinas. Now this ! Perhaps we will meet sometime in the future at the lake.

Yes Mike i remember that year quite well.
It really hurt all the businesses up there.
If there was any upside to it. The fishing was excellent. The kokanee were big and plentiful. With the lake being drawn down and very little boat traffic. People didnt think they could launch, so they didnt come up. It was like fish in a barrel!
