Caught that with a lure? Huh...What were you fishing with?

I only ask because I've never caught one with artificial bait before.

I was using a little power worm with a spinner attached to it. Literally thought it was a baby bass until I hauled it out and saw the behemoth bluegill lol. I didnt even know they would go for one.

Really? I catch gill on little rooster tail, jigs, and flies all the time when I’m going after bass in my regular pond spots. They hit more than the bass do at times.

I've never had that type of experience. However I just recently started using the specific type or lure i caught it on so maybe I'll catch more.

I've accidentally caught catfish and bream on my bass lures. I assume it must be pretty commonplace.

I've heard of catfish going for some lures but I've never heard of a bluegill going for plastic until I pulled that one in lol

Catch them on plastics all the time in central KY. They will pick up a 7" worm from the tail so they tend to not get hooked. Small Jughead's with 1 or 2 inch grubs will take them.

Oh good, I thought you were saying that you had never heard of bluegill at first.

Bluegill will hit anything, especially if they are hungry. I caught them on a leaf once as a kid.

Bluegill are pretty aggressive eaters, I've caught tons when going after smallmouth using ultralight gear. Many times the lure is almost the same size as the fish. I've caught the most on inline spinners, but still get them on soft baits from time to time. They might have more to do with the treble hooks though.

Interesting. I'd been fishing for almost 20 years now and I've never even seen a bluegill strike a lure. I've seen followers but never a hit, it's honestly a little mind blowing to hear it's a common thing in some places.

I primarily use ultralight gear and lures, so that might have something to do with it. But both in streams, lakes, and farm ponds I often catch bluegill and other sunfish. I usually pull in at least one every fishing outing, so it's very common to me.

Nice lil' fish. Did you catch any more at that spot? Where was it?

From the time bluegills start nesting in the Spring until the end of Summer you can have a lot of good sport catching them with a fly rod and popping bugs. I grew up in the deep South and my dad and I did no other form of fishing for about a five year period when I was a teenager. We had a single fly rod and a handful of bugs. I'd paddle and he'd fish and then we would swap. Great memories.

I catch lots of bluegill in Kansas lakes and farm ponds on Vibrax and Mepps spinners as well as Berkley Gulp worms and small soft baits.
