As a beginner am I allowed to pier fish wherever I want? Will I get heckled by the locals?
One of the reasons I never learned how to surf(even though I body board) is because I heard some surfers have gang mentality and won’t let new people ride the waves or heckle you/beat you up if you go into their territory.
I’ve watched videos of Asians getting heckled and told to leave because the spot belongs to a local/OG fisherman. With all the racism going on I’d rather not risk starting a fight. Is this an issue when pier fishing? Or are people generally very welcoming and helpful? Looking to fish in SoCal.

I don't fish in SoCal, but I've never seen anyone actually get into a fight or anything pier fishing in Texas. You made get a snide comment or something, but I doubt you get in any trouble. Be considerate and don't cast over other people's lines and you should be fine.

As long as your fishing legally you can absolutely fish wherever you want. No one is going to heckle you, most fisherman would gladly assist a beginner not try to hinder them.

Some piers in socal have sharking crews that are very active right now trying to get threshers. Just stay off the end if they are there because they will get mad. I dont blame them though. They are out there almost every week trying to get on some sharks. Also start with mono so you dont tangle with anyone else or cut off anyone.

NamesNera: Use common sense and good manners and I dont think you will have problems. Keep a reasonabler distance from other fishermen, and dont cast over anyone's line and you should be o.k. if someone is fighting a big fish then give them room to move with the fish. Just Sayin...RJS
People in socal are just like people everywhere. use some common sense, let them know that you're a beginner and don't try to act like you know everything, because you don't, and you'll find that the other fishermen and women will treat you as well as you treat them - respect begets respect. Might be a few more people in socal, but that's about the only difference. Of course, just like anywhere else, you've always got a few a-holes that are going to show up - try to avoid those.
I can’t believe someone wud heckle a newbie-/- do it, enjoy urself - be safe, stay healthy.
I agree. unles the fisherman is obnoxious, dressed as to draw attention to themsleves, and acting in a wild or noticable manner they would not likely to be bothered. Just Sayin....RJS
Much good advice on this thread. Have fun, and don't fall prey to the local 'fish police', unless they're official.
I said there's always a couple of a-holes that show up. #1 rule - don't be one of those guys.

Why are these Shark guys more entitled than any one else.
they probably wore"MAGA" hats too, huh?
The guys RJS was talkin about? Yeah, most likely had them damn red hats on.
