Why do this? Why not just tie braid to lure?

When braid first came out, 15 - 20 years ago, I did that, my catch rate went down. I went from braid to mono, catch rate went back up. When fluoro. came out I went from braid to flouro., the catch rate even more. You do what you want to do and I will do what I want top do. Whatever works for you.

1Old Timer; here's my reason. i have trouble with extra skinney sized line. Since braid is about 1/3 the size of mono, i have 50 lb braid, which is about equal to 20 lb mono. So, if i hang up and have to break my line, It would be much more difficult to break. So by adding about 6 ft of leader to the braid, and the mono leader is say 12 lb. test strength, i have a much easier task to break it off, assuming the know is a good knot. Just Sayi,,,RJS

Hey buddy. For the type of fishin we do out at Sonoma, finesse type, It's better to use a leader of mono or floro tied to the braid. That way the fish can't see the line as much when we're drop shoting or senko fishin.

Have you been out there lately? I was out last week and the trout were at about 50 feet. However, some of the smaller ones were feedin on little 1 inch shad on the surface. I caught 1 bout 14 inches.

There's time that you can tie braid to your lure such as fishing heavy cover or dark stained water. But if your fishing any finesse baits or clear water you'll be much better off with a Florocarbon leader. That's just a generic answer but you should get the point.

The fact is, unless youโ€™re fishing "Crystal Clear Water" โ€“ and even then Iโ€™m still not afraid to throw straight braid โ€“ there are very few times when tying on a leader is going to increase your hookup ratio.

"IF YOU ARE FISHING STAINED WATERS, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO POINT TO TYING ON A LEADER."

Nine times out of ten Iโ€™m not going to do anything special when fishing with braid. That being said, I almost exclusively use a "Dark Green Color" when Iโ€™m fishing with "Braided Line."

If the line is going to spook a weary fish, the "Newer Dark Green Braided Fishing Lines" are almost as invisible as any Fluorocarbon or Monofilament Line.

In fact, I would argue that because the diameter of these braided lines are so much smaller, they are probably even more invisible to the fish than a higher test weight Fluoro or Mono line.

Think about it; I can pitch out a "65 Pound Braided Line" that is going to be the same diameter as a "12 Pound Mono Line." In situations where you need that higher test line, why would you not use straight braid?

For ALL our striper fishin in the Napa or Petaluma rivers we use straight braid to lures. But the water is bout the color of light chocolate milk. It's pretty muddy at times.

We are lucky to see and identify a fish more than a couple feet down. Gotta get em close up.

Yeah buddy, they opened it last Wed. As far as I know it's still open. It's just a matter of if you want to go out there and breathe all this stuff into your lungs.

Visibility and all that
One thing to consider
With jerkbaits and other treble hook lures but especially Jerkbaits , the braid tangles with the hooks on the cast . A lot
I eliminate this by using leader material which is stiffer than regular mono
Fouled hooks significantly reduced.

I get that a lot too while striper fishin. Got braid tied directly to my lure and it fouls up sometimes when I cast.

Try it. It works for me. I use seaguar blue label a lot
If you do. Try to snap the line between your hands.
I got a bad spool one time and it cost me nice fish
Otherwise never an issue
