Methods for distance casting?

I don’t own a boat or kayak yet, so for now I’m stuck fishing from the bank. What are some good methods for achieving further distances when casting? I’m using a spinning rod/reel if that makes a difference.

I’ve found that if you want insane distance, get your line wrapped around your rod tip and cast with all your might. I’m pretty sure some of my lures are still in orbit somewhere over coastal North Carolina. Oh and the more expensive or loved the lure, the greater the distance when using the above method.

I’ve been there. First time I did that, I was trying to show off for the wife and kids. I don’t know what is more impressive; the distance, the deafening snap of the line, or the beautiful shade of embarrassing red that I turned. My wife laughed for 15 minutes while I fumbled with tying on more gear. A true FML moment.

My favorite thing to show my kids is the fine art of casting accuracy. It follows the 8 step method outlined below:

Spool up with 300 yds of the finest braided line.

Point out a perfect casting location on the other side of the lake where there are sure to be many of your largest target species.

Tie on the 2nd most expensive lure you have (because you lost the most expensive using the aforementioned method).

Take careful aim and cast.

Accidentally close the bale shortly after release causing the lure to make a horrendous splash 9 feet in front of you.

Try again, this time making a beautiful long cast directly into a group of leafy tree branches 30 feet directly above your target are across the pond or lake.

Violently shake your rod back and forth to ensure the kids know just how strong all 300 yds of braided line can be.

Cut braided line with fingernail clippers and promise the kids we can get ice cream if they promise not to tell Mom the new words you’ve taught them.

Dude I really hope you don't just clip the line, break off at the knot, I have to untangle waterfowl and wildlife from 80 lb+ braid like twice a month.

All good, just rubbed me the wrong way because I reel up line balls and nests every time I go out to fish my local lakes.

Holy shit man. I haven’t laughed this hard in years. I let my wife read this while I tried to gain my composure. She said “Holy crap, is this every guy that fishes”? We should all compile our “methods” and write a book.

You need a surf casting rod, a good 9-10 ft, conventional reel (longer cast) and then practice, watch online videos, search for “surf fishing” “surf casting “ etc.

My surf fishing buddies and I have found a spinning can cast way farther than a conventional.

It depends on the reel. The casting distance record was set with an Abu 6500 CT that went 305yd. Most guys running CT reels achieve over 200yd regularly, often casting down to the knot. The same reel with a level wind, while you won't empty the spool like the previous examples, have no trouble reaching out to 200yd providing they are using the correct rod. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BS9fMCGaBqk&t=132s

For most people, yeah probably.

There is more potential distance in a conventional setup as there is less drag mid-flight.

Longer rod, faster action, heavier lure, or lighter line usually will get you more distance.
