Out'ta compassion for an otherwise hapless/helpless durn Squid, they walked away from her. As did she, they made a huge mistake. Though, apparently, it worked out.

methinks they just knew when to retreat
all Marines have a natural aptitude for that maneuver

The only time I remember Marines going backwards was to pick up our own...to include once our corpsman who had been wounded.
