On Wed., Aug. 26th, in the afternoon, 'Swim Call' came across the P.A. aboard the
USCGC Kimball, whereby a good number of the crew followed protocol, changed into their swimwear and jumped in for
a dip ! Shortly after, the warning 'SHARK' blared out loudly, and everyone headed for safety, some towards the Cutter and others toward the small boat that accompanied the swimmers !
A 6- to 8-ft. shark, identified only as a possible mako or thresher, was headed toward the 30 to 40
people in the water ! Just then,
Maritime Enforcement Specialist
1st Class Samuel Cintron
opened fire to shoot the shark !
He managed to delay/detain it long enough using short,
accurate bursts of his weapon
to allow everyone to reach
safety ! Once there was no potential 'food' in the water, the shark swam away !
The only reported injury was both funny and ironic; it was a small scrape in the center of a crewman's tattoo - in the middle
of an open set of shark's teeth !
The crew then unwound from the scary event by watching a
couple of 'appropriate' movies -
'Jaws' and 'Sharknado' !
