Line getting damaged?

I recently started using braided line and I've noticed during and after pulling out backlashes if its a particular bad backlash the line will get this lighter coloration and the strands within the line will seperate, but once pulled taught they go back together seemingly fine.

I wasn't sure if this actually affected the strength of my line and if I should cut off those segments when it happens or if its good to continue fishing with. Last thing I want is it to cause my line to snap and either loose a lure or fish

Look closely at your rod guides. They should have little rings in them to allow the line to pass through smoothly. It’s possible one of them has popped out which causes the line to scrape through the guide instead of it being smooth.

Get the coated line (coated braid).

I dont fish without it.

Its more expensive but lasts much longer, especially if youre rubbing against stuff (braid is suscetable to abrasion wear)

I use suffix superline. Its like 4x more expensive some places but it lasts forever (some of my rods have 5-10 year old line with barely any sign of wear)

You can respool it on backwards whenever it does start to fatigue and double the life time too

Edit: I lose soo much gear in the jetties if the braid isn't coated. My friends lose like 5x as much gear as me (bc I use the coated)

I can't remember the last time I had a break off on the braid, since switching.

Edit 2: yes it definately effects the strength of the line id say. (You can always do a comparison yourself to see). I've casted lures straight off the line bc of wear in the past, especially if im using a snap swivel or quick snap, as im dont retie as much with them

Sure, but that line is overkill if you don't fish jetties or drift rocky rivers, which the vast majority of fishermen don't, especially beginners.

Yea. But I reccomemd regular coated braid still.

I've always had an issue with wear and braid (before switching) especially if your using a snap swivel (and not re-tying often)

Braid fatigues much more so then mono does in a few ways

I don't think it's a very good strategy to recommend the absolute best and most expensive thing unless it's actually necessary, but of course I understand why you like that good line. You are fishing in one of the two worst environments for braided line that exists. You actually need that expensive line that compensates for braid's greatest weakness, abrading against rocks. But someone who isn't fishing both in current and around rocks really doesn't.

Which ocean are you fishing in?

All good points

I was just providing my line as an example to how much better coated braid can be.

I beleive it helps to get the entry teir coated braid especially bc beginners use the quick change swivels alot, and without relying that knot can easily fatigue. But if you watch your line you can just retie.

I have wear issues on my freshwater setups too. Getting caught in trees and what not. Plus I lose less gear bc I'm able to pull out snags (be careful doing this, for all beginners reading this).

I fish alot of jetties around South jersey. (From Delaware bay, to the AC inlet, but also fish the banks of the rivers and back bays)

I also use the costed braid for wreck fishing (bc of the abrasion wear again)

alright thank you and I'm assuming the abrasion is probably from the backlash when it knots up badly and has to be picked out.

Yea it may not be abraision per se. But its wear, an as an engineer I'm confident adding a coating will help in some way (at least). The tigher those braid threads are to each other the stronger it is. (Thats why you'll see more expensive lines with more threads or turns-per-inch)

The discoloration and easy separation are signs of cheaper line. There is very wide spectrum of quality when it comes to braided line. What you are describing happens to me with power pro, which in my experience should be even less expensive than it is. Spider Wire is a good middle of the road brand, and the 10 or 15 lb test glides through your guides like silk.

For checking the insides of the line guides use a Q-tip. Nicks will grab onto imperfections. Another good tool is a piece of nylon stocking ...same result.

Hoss: Whether your line has suffered stress and abrasion, or not, you might consider swapping ends. if you have another empty reel, run your line off on it, or just out in your yard, then tie the end you've been using on to the arbor of your reel and wind it up. That was you get twice the use of the line. As suggested by other posts, check your guides, too. Just Sayin...RJS

I usually use a four foot length of mono or leader material on the braid on my plugging rods. The act of casting causes abrasion of the braid line at the point where the line goes through the tip since it is usually the same spot every cast. Mono stands up to it much better.

You might get some hate mail if cheap line is purchased and put on the reel, and the next time out fishing it breaks because it was CHEAPER.
