Hello All

I introduced my 7 year old to fishing a few weeks ago he enjoyed all but only issue now we went to Pier and after 2-3 hours had a few nibbles but no catch yet I have researched more to see as when high tides come and go as Most pro and amateur fishermen say this is best time to catch
I have purchased all the best equipment to use per say decent rod and reels and even used store bait artificial /blood worms/squid the list goes on
Anyone with advice on best bait to catch off a Norfolk pier and when to really go out to fish

Any suggestions will surely put a smile on my lil guys face

Thanks

Squid should do just fine. Try shrimp next time. Try to get in the water just before the waves brake or a little deeper. Plenty more advice will be on the way. We care We share. Good luck.

Squid, Shrimp, and once you catch a fish use a little piece of the fish ( meat and skin ) as bait. Go to a pet store ( call ahead ) get some feeder goldfish and hook one of them on a hook so they stay alive and swim awhile. They won’t stay alive very long in salt water but probably won’t need to.

What pier are you fishing? Actually try to go when the tide is full and fish the out going tide. That's when bait is being pulled out of the James. I lived just off of Chesapeake Blvd. 5 blocks from the bay until I was 15 then moved to Lynnhaven Inlet area. Bay Island.

As others have said, shrimp, squid, I'd use earthworms as bloodworms are really expensive as well as cut bait if you do catch something. Tight lines and good luck.

I'd get up with you and may be able to later. Right now I'm pretty tied up at home. Haven't been able to fish for the last couple of years. Mike

Something you might try is to get a cricket cage from bait shop. Put enough lead in it to get it to the bottom, on a string of course, put some shrimp in it and drop to the bottom. Give it a little soak to attract some fish. If you use a small gold hook, long shank and just enough weight to get the hook to the bottom with a pinch of shrimp on the hook you'll catch some fish. Use a bottom rig.

If you catch blow toads, don't throw them back, they are delicious and easy to clean. Don't put them on ice just in a bucket of water. Ice makes them hard to skin. Google "how to clean blow toads". Be careful with the toads as they can bite the be-jesus out of you hence the long shank Hook. You boy will get a kick out of them when they blow up. Mike

Ive gone to tje pier in no norfolk. Spots and croakers love regular night crawlers that have I been fed the neon green food to make them look radioactive, they barely hit the water and i had a fish. Caught bluefish on squid when casting further out. B ut make sure u try to fish incoming, high, and outgoing tide it was the best action.
