What size and kind of hook do you use for drop shots when targeting big bass?

I have size 1 and 2 octopus and 1/0 stand up drop shot hooks (they have an extra eye hole to run your weight line through that makes it stand up perfectly, they're pretty tight). But between both tournaments this weekend I need to be throwing this alot, and don't wanna go to big or small. I can make a run to dicks after work if I need something else.

Thanks for the advice.

Look at your pointy finger, from the tip to the bottom of it you can see 3 bars/lines, a hook for dropshots should reach from the tip of your finger to the second line/bar or slightly smaller

Im no drop shot pro, and am obviously looking for advice. But that seems incredibly unreliable. So the bigger you are the bigger the hook you need? Maybe I'm missing something but I don't really understand this. Not trying to be rude, just really confused. I've never heard to base your hook choice off the size of certain body parts you have.

I'm a mediocre angler and I don't do much dropshot style fishing, and I'm not the best teacher, that's why it seems unreliable, I also saw that this post is an hour old without a single comment, so I decided to just comment instead of leaving it blank.

Yeah right on, I just don't get it. Like did you learn this from someone you know? Or like see it in a YouTube video? I just can't wrap my head around how the lines on your finger correlate to what size hook is best for a certain style of fishing. And I didn't mean you're unreliable, just that everyone's fingers vary so much that using something that's so different for everyone would seem unreliable as a way to measure something.

I think you're all set with that hook selection, though I personally would prefer to use a tight dropper loop or even a palomar knot on that #2 octo instead of a stand up drop shot hook... they'll both work, but for me it's all about the less hardware the better.

Good luck in the tournaments!

Yeah, that's basically why I haven't used the stand up ones much the few times I've done it. I figured the idea is a subtle presentation, and more metal is less subtle. I usually do a double pitzen knot, but I'll check out that tight dropper. Thanks n

The 3/0 is a good size for drop shot fishing. Spinshot/Swivel Shot – The VMC Spinshot and Gamakatsu Swivel Shot hooks have built-in swivels and is designed to eliminate line twist. If you have given the other hooks your best shot and are still struggling with line twisting then you may want to try these hooks.

Select the Best Drop Shot Hook;

Since the drop shot rig became has so popular, there has been a flood of new hooks coming out onto the market and it can get overwhelming. Like most things on this site, I recommend you keep it very simple. There are only 3 types of hooks to consider for your drop shot needs.

Owner Mosquito Drop Shot HookOctopus Style Hooks – These are the short shank, wide gap finesse hooks like the Owner Mosquito, and Gamakatsu Drop Shot Hook. The hook eyes are parallel with the hook point so that when the weight is on the bottom, the hook and bait stand straight out. Owner and Gamakatsu hooks are also very sharp, and only take minimal pressure to get hook penetration.

Roboworm Rebarb Drop Shot HookStraight Shank O’Shaughnessy – The most popular type of this hook is the Roboworm Rebarb hook. Tons of bass guys out west swear by the Roboworm Rebarb hook, including Aaron Martens and Justin Lucas, and that is a stout endorsement. The Rebarb allows you to rig your worm “texposed” and fish it snag-free through grass and cover. The 3/0 is a good size for drop shot fishing.

VMC Spinshot Drop Shot HookSpinshot/Swivel Shot – The VMC Spinshot and Gamakatsu Swivel Shot hooks have built-in swivels and is designed to eliminate line twist. If you have given the other hooks your best shot and are still struggling with line twisting then you may want to try these hooks. The drawback is you lose a little sensitivity because the hook is not in direct contact with your line. The swivel can also bend under the pressure of a big fish.
