Hello, My name is Gordon and I am getting back into fishing. My 16 year old boy has the fishing fever and he wants me to take him every weekend. I haven't been fishing for many years and I am getting excited seeing him get excited. I will be trying for stripped bass this weekend around the Antioch/Sacramento/San Juaquin Delta area and like I said I am new again in fishing. I even have to buy us a few polls tomorrow. Any advice or pointers would be apprieated. Thanks!

Welcome Gordon to the FS! I know your excitement, I get it all the time when I take my grandkids fishing! I can’t help you with striper fishing, but someone will be here shortly with lots of ideas on fishing for them!

Welcome Back to Fishing and welcome to the Fishingstage. I would buy some medium action Rod and Reels that fit your budget but I don't do much Striper fishing yet. Saw1 would be a good source of information. He is not real far from you and will know what gear you need. You probably could PM him.

Will you be fishing from a boat or the shore? Either works well for stripers. Ugly stik rods and Shimano reels with 20 or 30 pound braid. 5/0 circle hooks and enough weight to keep you on the bottom in current. Use anchovies, sardines or mackerel for bait. In the evening or early morning you could try a surface bait like a Zara Spook - walk the dog. In the spring the big mamas start coming in to spawn. Dealing with a 35 pound fish from the shore can be interesting.

Welcome to the Stage, Gordon. To get started find a local, knowledgeable fishing tackle store near where you want to go. Fishing gear comes in so many different options. Tell them what kind of fish your after and where you want to go. I live in Fairfield and there is a Fisherman's Warehouse on North Texas St, not for off I80. They are very knowledgeable and carry tackle for every kind of fishing you will need. Start with cut bait like anchovies or sardines, fished with a sliding sinker rig. The fall run for stripers should start in a few weeks up the delta. Hope this helps and good luck.

Welcome Gordon,
I can’t help you with stripers in CA as my only experience with them was trolling umbrella rigs for them in GA, but from the previous posts I see you have some good info with which to start. These guys and gals provide a wealth of knowledge. Good luck and have some fun with your 16yr old. Memories last...go make some!

Welcome to the Forum, gkiley. We already have a regular, "Gordon", on here so in my book you will be "gkiley". O.K.? Do you have any friends or co-workers that fish stripers. If so, they can give you some ideas of what to buy, how & where to fish them, etc. Good luck and happy times, glad to have you on board.

OJdidit gets closest. (nice handle BTW) Fishin' with your kid, nothing gets better!! Answer to yourself some of the questions above and go to Walmart or the local tackle shop (always nice to support the home team) Build your arsenal from there and upgrade as you learn. It's ALL about the company you're with.

I’m kidding, of course. Golf is a great game. You have no one to blame but yourself if the outcome does not come out the way you liked. Nobody else missed a free throw, dropped a fly ball or fumbled on the goal line...you missed the putt, or hit the ball into the water. You truly get out of the game what you put into it. My opinion, of course.
