Tungsten euronymphs for ice fishing for bluegill

So I’ve got an interesting question. Do you think tungsten euronymph would work well for panfish through the ice? I see a lot of them are in the 1/8 ounce range and to me they seem like they’d probably work. So I’m just curious what people would think of this.

I know a guy who does it. He ties a small black beetle like pattern (lives in the weeds on midwest lake bottoms) and jigs it just above the weed bottom.

That’s what I was kind of thinking. I also have a vexilar so I’ll use that for suspended fish too

Perfect. You could also look at scud and dragonfly nymph patterns. Some lakes even get mayfly hatches. All those nymphs would work in the winter. Probably more effective than a wax worm.

Yeah and I honestly don’t think bluegill are to picky. A lot of times I’ve just used the smallest heaviest jig. Which euronymphs qualify as for me a lot of times

I have been tying "ice flies" for a few years now, and they do work. I tie them on jig hooks with bead or dumbbell eyes so they can be fished vertically. Bluegill and crappie both like pretty much any buggy/minnow looking pattern. I also tie on a rubber tail with a drop of colored paint on the end to attract attention. They don't have to be super heavy, unless you are fishing really deep, but I find that size 8 works well.

RJ: it appears they use a “special” dialect for their type of fishing.

Ice Ice Baby! Either you've been there and you get it, or you haven't and never will. Much like being in the military.

I lived in SoCal so there was no ice then moved to northeast of Austin we only get 1 snowy day every 2 years.
I guess I lead a sheltered life. At least my watchamacallit stays warm in winter. 🤠
