Originally I bought the Raven 11'6 im6 steelheader and a centerpin reel with 8lbs test. well.. For steelhead but I was wondering if I could catch Chinooks on it aswell without the line snapping every time or the rod breaking. Thanks

Your rod shouldn’t break if your drag is set correctly, but for chinook, I would go with at least 12 lb. It would be a much longer fight on 8 lb that stresses the fish out, and you’d run a higher chance of getting spooled.

Whoa. I use blood run 15lb for my main even for steelhead. Maybe swap out your main, go with a 12 lb leader? As far as the rod, I bought a lamiglas x-11 Great Lakes 12’ for around $100 for a backup. Might be worth a shot if your worried about breaking the raven.

Edit: just remembered that blood run recently came out with a heavier rod meant for salmon. Retails for $130 and looks great.

12 for steelhead and small coho...15 for chinook (main) bank fishing. Trolling in bay or ocean I would use 50 or so mainline braided. at least 25 leader. Chinook can be 50 lb fish. If you have 12 or 15 mainline plan on losing all your line in one good run.

I think you'll have a lot of fun with chinooks on what you've got, but you're likely gonna lose some fish. They get over 30 pounds, and those are not uncommon. the 15 pounders and under you'll probably be fine.

For river drift fishing for Salmon/Steelhead, I used a rod I made, a 9 1/2' G Loomis IM6 8-12lb rated and my casting reel loaded with 50 lb Spiderwire super braid because of the ball of line in the river and a 11lb leader to keep from damaging the rod. With a light rod if a big King or Steelhead decides to run, you are probably going to have to follow it.

Well, Hoss: Never be scared of losing a big fish! Think of all the exciting stories you would be able to tell later? Although if you are dead set on landing a whopper, go ahead and spend the dough. I believe Spirit has the proper take on the situation, though. Just Sayin...RJS

We landed many 20 lb Chinook on bank with 15 Main 12 leader. Two people ...one with net. Each fish was a 15 minute fight. In a boat its nice to have heavier line. There is also 20 or more bucks worth of gear on a Boat trolling. Just nice to reel a fatty in quicker when have the heavier gear. Other fisherman get tired of waiting on you too if in a small fishing hole full of chinook.
