Hi I'm Larry first time fishing in St. Johns river camping in Umatilla what bate? what lures? for what fish? Morning, Afternoon, Evening?
Night crawlers (earthworms) for panfish or catfish bait (chicken liver and blood, get it at Wally World) for cats will be your best bet, if your not a seasoned bass fisherman. Use a bobber, prop up your pole and settle in with a cold brew. Cats will be along shortly. Some big Largemouth bass in there..try a topwater popper, early or late or even after dark.
That's a complete answer, nothing i can add. Just Sayin...RJS

Enjoy your time there. Catching is a plus.
Well, partner, if it is a catfish, you don't have to worry about jerking the line. Most people do to set the hook, but catfish usually are going to eat and swallow the bait if allowed time to do so. Just sayin...RJS

Umatilla is by Ocala Nat. Park. I don't see where it's on the St. Johns river but you sure need to watch out for alligators any where it that area.
